What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a method of removing excess fat cells by means of different suction methods. In childhood, the number of fat cells is determined; this does not change in the course of life, with one exception: a massive weight gain (approx. 30kg). Otherwise, the fat cells change only in their size. Liposuction is – in addition to a few minimally invasive measures – the only way to permanently remove adipose tissue.
Depending on the number of body regions to be treated, the procedure can be performed either during dusk or under general anaesthetic. Before the actual process of suction, a liquid enriched with a local anaesthetic is always introduced into the suction areas. Once infiltrated, adipose tissue can be extracted with special cannulas that exert a suction.
When is liposuction useful?
The method of liposuction must not be used as a dietary substitute. It is a very good support to give the body a better contour in the long term. In order to keep the lost weight permanently, a fundamental change of life (nutrition, exercise, etc.) is required.
Liposuction does not help with obese metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance. It can also not be used to remove excess fat in chronic lipoedema.

In liposuction, dry techniques are distinguished from wet techniques (without or with liquid = tumenescence. Depending on which type of device or which cannulas are used, we differentiate between the following methods: conventional liposuction, vibration, ultrasound and laser liposuction. In all techniques, the aim is to dissolve and destroy the adipose tissue or cells; with a cannula (hollow needle) this is then extracted.
The different methods of liposuction and anesthesia can also be combined. The final result depends on how extensive the suction area is, how experienced the surgeon performing the procedure is, and what technique and anesthesia was used.
There is a spectrum of complications that can occur with any liposuction. The larger the wound area, the higher the risk of complications.
Possible complications and risks include anesthesia, postoperative swelling, hematoma and seromas. (muscle-like pain), dys-or paresthesia, hypesthesia, asymmetry, dents, irregularities, scars, infection, thrombosis and embolism, injury to surrounding structures (vessels, muscles, organs).
